Thebes was a powerful city-state in the Classical period that also participated in both the Persian and Peloponnese wars. During those wars the people of Thebes were in an alliance with the city-state of Sparta. But that didn't last for very long because Thebes and Sparta broke their alliance with Sparta. Later after the break Thebes reached a very, very strong period of war participants. The Thebans tried to take over many cities including
Thebes was inhabited from around 3200 BC. Thebes capitol was a city called Waset. Thebes had about 40,000 people living in the city state around 2,000 B.C. In 1,800 B.C. Thebes was the most populated city in Ancient Greece that had been recorded.
In 4th century BCE Thebes was the most powerful city in Greece. There is evidence that there were 2 story palaces with wall paintings and great fortifications. The whole city was surrounded by aqueducts made of terracotta pipes. From 2500 BCE there is evidence of food and wool production and storage - grinding stones and terracotta loom-weights and spools, and bronze carpentry tools. Trade, both local and further afield, is suggested by the presence of precious goods such as gold, silver, ivory, and Cycladic influenced stone vessels. From 2000 BCE the site expanded with the first presence of stone cists and pits for burials and shaft graves which contained precious objects. Hercules was born in Thebes.
Thebes was the largest city of the ancient region of Boetia and was the leader of the Boeotian confederacy. Thebes was not a seaport, it was a farming city. The Legendary Hero Hercules was born in Thebes. Thebes and Athens fought over the land between them. After the Greeks lost the battle, Alexander the Great destroyed the city of Thebes in 335 B.C. and sold all the people of Thebes into slavery in other cities. The Persians invaded Greece and the Thebans surrender while the Spartans died fighting. That let the Thebans save their city! Since the Thebans fought on the Persian side, other Greeks were very mad at Thebes.
